Why customers modernize

Nine outcomes, covered in full on the benefits page.

Preserve Business Logic

Modernize legacy infrastructure while preserving every business rule. Gain performance and security without losing decades of domain expertise.

New Insights

Modernization unlocks real-time visibility into business operations that legacy systems simply can’t provide. Every transaction, every state change becomes a data point you can analyze, visualize, and act on.

AI & Machine Learning

Legacy systems lock data in formats modern ML tools can’t read. Modernization frees your data for LLMs, predictive models, and advanced analytics.

Stay Competitive

Legacy systems slow you down: every change is expensive, every integration is painful, and every new requirement takes months. Modernization restores the ability to move fast.

Boost Performance

Experience faster processing speeds and improved efficiency with updated technology. Modern runtimes, async I/O, and cloud scale deliver performance gains that legacy platforms can’t match.

Reduce Costs

Reduce operational expenses with streamlined, modern solutions. Less hardware, less licensing, less developer time fighting an aging stack.

Scalability

Adapt to growing business demands with scalable and flexible systems. Modern cloud-native architectures grow with you: no forklift upgrades, no emergency rewrites.

Improved User Experience

Enhance usability and accessibility for both employees and customers. Modern UIs are fast, responsive, accessible, and built for the devices people actually use today.

Future-Ready Solutions

Prepare your business for future technological advancements and challenges. A modern platform isn’t just caught up to today. It’s ready for what comes next.

A deliberate, four-phase process

Modernization fails when teams underestimate domain complexity. We don’t. The discovery phase alone can surface business rules that have run unchanged since the Reagan administration, and those rules are usually the most valuable thing in the building.

Phase 01 · Discover

We audit your legacy system: source code, compiled dependencies, business rules, and institutional knowledge. Many of these systems carry 30+ years of undocumented domain logic.

OUTPUT: System inventory · risk map · compliance scope

Phase 02 · Plan

We design a modernization path that balances cost, risk, and timeline. Sometimes the right answer is a full re-architecture. Sometimes it is virtualization. We recommend what fits.

OUTPUT: Target architecture · phasing plan · budget

Phase 03 · Modernize

We translate or rebuild. QuickBasic to C#, Delphi to .NET, VB6 to Go. AI accelerates the work where source is available; expert developers handle the domain and integration work AI cannot.

OUTPUT: Modern codebase · test suite · CI/CD pipeline

Phase 04 · Operate

We hand off production-ready systems with documentation, runbooks, and, if you want, ongoing managed services. Your business logic is preserved, your infrastructure is current.

OUTPUT: Deployed system · runbooks · optional MSA

Event Storming: how we map your domain

Before any code is written, we run Event Storming workshops with your subject-matter experts to surface the business rules and process flow that live inside your existing system. Read why it works, how we run it, and what you get.

14 verticals. One discipline.

The technology changes; the discipline does not. Career experience spans every sector where software older than the people maintaining it still runs the business.

Defense & Aerospace · Government & Public Sector · Healthcare & Life Sciences · Financial Services · Manufacturing · Energy & Utilities · Logistics & Supply Chain · Retail & Distribution · Insurance · Legal & Professional Services · Education · Construction & Real Estate · Agriculture. Decision guides

Before choosing a vendor, work out whether you should move at all and how to sequence it: when not to modernize, rewrite vs strangler fig, and automated VB6 conversion vs manual rewrite.

Frequently asked questions

What is legacy modernization?

Legacy modernization is the process of transforming outdated applications, typically written in MS-DOS languages, Visual Basic 6, Delphi, or older .NET Framework versions, into modern, supported, secure, and scalable software. We preserve your business logic while placing it on a current technology stack.

How long does a modernization project take?

Virtualization projects take 2–6 weeks. Re-architecture projects range from 6 weeks for a small VB6 app to 9+ months for large enterprise systems. We scope every engagement with a fixed timeline after the free 1-hour consultation.

Are your developers US-based?

Yes. 100% of our workforce consists of US citizens working on American soil, with no offshore outsourcing.

What languages do you migrate from?

QuickBasic, Turbo Pascal, C, assembly, BASIC PDS, VB-DOS, Visual Basic 1–6, VBA, VB.NET, Delphi 1–XE series, and .NET Framework 2.0–4.8.

What do you migrate to?

Primarily C# .NET (Core / .NET 8+), Go, and modern Delphi. We target Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android, and AWS / Azure cloud platforms.

Why should I modernize existing .NET applications?

.NET Framework (1.x through 4.8) is in long-term support but no longer receives new features, runs only on Windows, and locks you out of the cross-platform .NET ecosystem. We modernize both Visual Basic .NET and C# applications, including WinForms, WPF, Web Forms, WCF, and classic ASP.NET projects, to current .NET (Core / .NET 8+) running on Windows, Linux, or macOS.

Do you offer free consultations?

Yes. Every engagement starts with a free 1-hour legacy system consultation. You receive a written preliminary recommendation with no obligation.

What platforms do you support for modernization?

Target platforms: Mac OS X, Linux, Windows (64-bit), and mobile (iOS, Android). Legacy source environments include MS-DOS, 16-bit Windows, and 32-bit Windows. We can create a modern version of your application that runs on 64-bit Windows, Linux, or macOS, or entirely on mobile when there are no hardware or peripheral dependencies.

How long does the modernization process take?

Duration varies with project scope and complexity, typically ranging from a few weeks to several months. Virtualizations are fastest since no application changes are required. Re-architecting a legacy application takes the longest, since business domain, processes, rules, and many other concerns must be considered. We scope concretely after discovery.

What are the costs associated with modernization?

Costs are determined by scope and requirements. Book a free 1-hour consultation and we'll provide a detailed estimate tailored to your system and objectives.

Why should I modernize MS-DOS applications?

MS-DOS applications have run reliably for decades, but operating them on aging hardware is increasingly difficult, since replacement parts are rare or unavailable. Modernization lets you use current technologies, improve user experience, and ensure compatibility with modern hardware and operating systems. We offer a range of approaches, from virtualization on modern hardware to full re-architecture focused on core business domains and processes.

Why should I modernize Visual Basic applications?

VB for MS-DOS shares the same challenges as QuickBasic, Turbo Pascal, C, and assembly for DOS. VB for Windows applications typically depend on third-party controls that are no longer supported. Because these environments (Windows 3.x, 95, XP, and similar) are end-of-life, they pose security and reliability risks. Modernization lets you use current technologies, improve UX, and ensure compatibility with modern systems.

Why should I modernize Delphi applications?

Delphi is still viable today, but experienced developers are increasingly hard to find. Delphi itself has capabilities equal to or exceeding modern languages like Go and C#. Because of those unique strengths, we offer several paths: in-place version upgrades (Delphi 1 to latest), or complete conversions to C# (or another modern language) with an option for new software architectures.

Can you modernize mainframe systems?

We don't directly modernize mainframe systems, but we can re-architect an entire solution representing the business domain and processes of a typical mainframe system. The new solution runs on-premise, in the cloud, or hybrid, and replaces the legacy mainframe. These are long-term engagements, often months to years depending on domain complexity and access to subject-matter experts. Contact us to start the conversation.

What other types of applications should be modernized?

40+ years of experience, from 16-bit MS-DOS to cloud-native solutions in AWS and Azure. Modernizing any legacy system lets you gain real-time business insights through modern architectures (event-based, ML-integrated), so you can react quickly to market changes or create new revenue streams.

How do I get started with legacy modernization?

Book a free 1-hour consultation. We'll discuss your specific requirements and explore how we can help modernize your legacy systems. No obligation, no sales pressure.

Why should we engage with Legacy to Modern?

40+ years of experience across 14 vertical markets. We started before the Internet existed, and we stay hyper-focused on the people who use the software and the business objectives it serves. 100% US citizen workforce on U.S. soil, no offshore outsourcing. And younger developers generally don't want to learn "dead" languages like QuickBasic, Turbo Pascal, or VB for Windows, making the expertise to understand these ecosystems rare and valuable.

Do you support other programming languages?

We currently support QuickBasic, BASIC PDS, Turbo Pascal, C, and Visual Basic for DOS under MS-DOS, plus Visual Basic for Windows and Delphi for Windows. Depending on your legacy system, we can add support for additional languages like FORTRAN77, evaluated case-by-case against in-house expertise. In all cases, understanding the business domain, processes, and documentation is critical for systems that need to be re-designed.

Why not just use AI to convert legacy apps?

AI helps where source code is available, but legacy systems frequently depend on compiled third-party components that cannot be converted, undocumented business rules, and domain knowledge AI has never seen. VB6 and Delphi apps often have this issue, and AI has seen very little MS-DOS code. We use AI where it accelerates the work, but it cannot replace the full modernization process. In the end, it's about the people who use these applications.

Is my project too small for you?

There are no small projects for us. Your application may just need virtualization, or a thin wrapper that offers a new interface while preserving the original functionality. Contact us either way. We're happy to help you figure out the right path.
